In-Person Flexibility Workshops
Interested in hosting a flexibility workshop at my studio?
All the suggested topics below are designed as standalone workshops where students will walk away with not only a stretching routine to help them work towards their split-y or backbend-y goals, but a more thorough understanding of the why behind proper stretching form, engagement, and exercise choice based on our anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics.
Suggested Workshop Topics
An accessible site allows visitors with disabilities to browse the site with the same or a similar level of ease and enjoyment as other visitors. This can be achieved with the capabilities of the system on which the site is operating, and through assistive technologies.
Introduction to Contortion (Backbends and Splits)
Suggested Length: 1.5-2 hours
Description: Aimed at students who have a bit of existing flexibility and want to take their training further. This workshop will focus on active flexibility drills to strengthen both back and leg flexibility, and working on skills like variations of bridges, cobra poses, splits, leg scales, and more. There will be a heavy emphasis on proper alignment and muscle engagement to ensure a safe practice - so be prepared to learn a bit about your own anatomy!
Suggested Prerequisites:
-
Students should be able to comfortably hold a bridge with straight arms (does not need to be a super bendy bridge)
-
Flat splits not required!
“Full Body” Backbending
Suggested Length: 1 hour
Description: Do you feel like your backbends always "crunch" into your low back? Is your upper back flat as a board when you try to backbend? This workshop will focus on learning to bend from the ENTIRE backbending chain, with isolation exercises to target our hips (they're part of backbends!), lower back, upper back, shoulders, and even neck. If you're looking for a more even, sustainable backbend - this workshop is for you!
Suggested Prerequisites: None (this workshop is open to all levels). Variations of drills will be given for different flexibility levels.
Getting Split-ier Splits (Front Splits, Middle Splits, & Straddle Pancakes)
Suggested Length: 1-1.5 hours
Description: Aimed at students who are interested in deepening both front and middle splits. Whether you're working to get flat splits for the first time ever, or are already working on oversplits (splits on blocks), we'll work on helping you safely deepen your splits at your current level. This workshop will have a heavy emphasis on active flexibility (strengthening the muscles needed to support a greater range of motion in all our splits) as well as proper form and alignment (ex. training our muscles to keep our hips “square” in front splits).
Suggested Prerequisites: None (this workshop is open to all levels). Variations of drills will be given for different flexibility levels.
Stretchy Shoulders
Suggested Length: 1 hour
Description: This one-hour workshop will specifically focus on shoulder flexibility and strength. While we’ll work on our shoulders in multiple ranges of motion (internal and external rotation, flexion, extension, and abduction), this workshop will emphasize maximizing overhead shoulder reach flexibility. Students will learn the importance of training their rotator cuff muscles for long-term shoulder health, as well as practical active flexibility drills that target the larger muscle groups to help increase shoulder flexibility. We’ll also train body awareness for understanding where our shoulder blades are (and should be) in various stretches, and learn to identify sensations of nerve tension and how to adjust our training to keep our nerves safe.
Suggested Prerequisites: None (this workshop is open to all levels). Variations of drills will be given for different flexibility levels.
